Workin’ Moms: The Most Unnecessary Storylines

Workin’ Moms is one of the most relatable modern-day sitcoms, as it deals with the day-to-day issues of being a new mother and a working professional, but there are still plenty of unnecessary Workin’ Moms storylines. Workin’ Moms shows that motherhood can be as brutal as it is wonderful. Between the cuddles and adorable sleeping babies are worried about working too much and marriage woes. It’s a dark comedy that tells the truth about women who want to raise kids as much as they want to find professional success. Kate (Catherine Reitman), Anne (Dani Kind), Frankie (Juno Rinaldi), and Jenny (Jessalyn Wanlim) are finding their way and trying to adjust.

Now that Workin’ Moms has concluded with season 7, the show went out on a high note, as it was a consistently funny, realistic look at motherhood since day one. When reflecting on the past seven seasons, there have been some plotlines that make sense for the characters and show the hard times they have had. However, the inimitable sitcom Workin’ Momsdoes hit some wrong notes, from the mean nannyto the relationship between Nathan and Kate to Nathan cheating on her. There are some Workin’ Moms storylines where characters make silly choices or become involved in situations that don’t feel logical or necessary — and these are the worst of them.

12 Frankie Goes Away To A Center And Considers Working There

Workin’ Moms didn’t shy away from Frankie’s postpartum depression in season one and that is something to praise. But when Frankie goes away to a treatment center to get some help, the show takes a turn that’s pretty confusing. Frankie does so well that she considers working there after she’s offered a job. But why would she do that? That would mean taking her out of the main setting of the show since everyone hangs out in Toronto and at the mom-and-baby group, and it’s one of the strangest Workin’ Moms storylines.

11 Nathan Cheats On Kate

It was a tough Workin’ Moms storyline the season two finale, “Look Back”, when Kate learned her husband Nathan (Philip Stenberg) has been cheating on her with Mean Nanny (Jess Salgueiro). It was clear that they had trouble in their marriage before that, but this seemed like such an unnecessary storyline because it’s so cliche. This Workin’ Moms storyline turned the clever series into yet another TV show that had a husband cheat on their wife with the nanny/someone who is much younger. The show could’ve come up with something more original? While Workin’ Moms can be relatable, Nathan’s affair is a low note for the sitcom.

10 Anne’s Ex-Husband Insults A Very Intimate Part Of Her Life

It’s one thing for Anne to get an office on the same floor as her ex-husband Brad (Christopher Redman). It’s another for him to hypnotize her in his office and then insult a very intimate part of her life. There is no reason for Brad to comment on the way that Anne behaves when she’s sleeping with someone. This was an unnecessary Workin’ Moms storyline because it was so creepy, and it didn’t really go anywhere after this. Anne just got mad at her ex-husband all over again when fans already knew that she hated him, and it was retreading old territory.

9 Val Gets Upset The Women Won’t Hang Out With Her At A Retreat

Val from Workin' Moms sprawled in front of her kitchen counter, wearing a blue dress.

The women on Workin’ Moms don’t love Val (Sarah McVie), as she’s way too desperate for them to like her — and it makes for one of the most uncomfortable Workin’ Moms storylines. It’s especially unnecessary for them to go on a retreat (in the season two episode, “Retreat”), then wonder why Val got upset that they don’t want to hang out in her hotel room and drink all night. This was painful to watch because Val finds herself in this kind of situation a lot, and she never learns from her mistakes. This plotline didn’t need to be part of the sitcom, and it would have been nice to see a Workin’ Moms storyline where the characters bond and connect with Val.

8 Jenny Gets A Piercing That Gets Infected

Ian and Jenny in the bathroom in Workin' Moms

In the first season, Jenny is really having a tough time being a mother, and she decides to go out, get super drunk, and also get a piercing in a very intimate area. It gets infected, which makes this storyline even more awkward to watch. It’s clear that Jenny and Ian won’t work out, and that Jenny isn’t mature enough to be a mother, and it’s one of the most uncomfortable Workin’ Moms storylines. It would have worked better if they had a blow-out fight or Ian confronted her about how she was messing up. While this is an event that does happen in real life, it still felt a bit unnecessary, as Jenny’s bad luck was already bordering on unbelievable.

7 Kate’s Mom Babysits But Gets Mad About Her Dog

Kate's mom holds the baby in Workin' Moms

It’s pretty weird that in the season 1 episode “Bad Help,” Kate’s mother starts babysitting her son Charlie, but she makes a big deal about how much she hates the dog. Kate is one of the best TV moms of the decade, but this conversation with her mother doesn’t make any sense and is unquestionably mean. The narrative doesn’t even feel like a real Workin’ Moms storyline. Instead, Kate’s mom could have questioned whether work/life balance is possible or something more closely related to the theme of the show.

6 A Creepy College Student Becomes Obsessed With Anne

Anne and Lionel argue in the kitchen in Workin' Moms

In season 2, Anne meets a college student when she gives a seminar, and the young woman becomes completely obsessed with her. The student wants to learn everything that she can about Anne, tries to Facebook friend everyone she knows, and even books a therapy session so she can spend time with her. This storyline gets especially creepy when they meet for lunch and the student has dyed and cut her hair to look just like Anne’s. This seems so unnecessary because it doesn’t go anywhere or lead to anything, and Anne is so hilarious that she a Workin’ Moms storyline revolving around her could have gone in any direction.

5 Ian Gets A STD

Ian on the phone whilst carrying a baby on the street in Workin' Moms

It’s sweet to watch Jenny’s baby daddy Ian (Dennis Andres) start dating again and try to shop his screenplay around. But it’s not so sweet when he gets an STD after sleeping with a new woman. He handles it in such a silly way by oversharing with the pharmacist when he’s picking up meds. This Workin’ Moms storyline makes Ian seem even more immature when he should be upping his game as a dad to his baby girl.

4 There Are Lice At Camp

Characters scratch their heads in Workin' Moms

In the season 4 episode, “Lice,” there are lice at the camp that the children attend, which is another storyline that could have been omitted from Workin’ Moms without harming the show at all. There’s nothing all that funny about lice because by now, a lice outbreak has been in enough films and TV shows that there’s no fresh take on it. It doesn’t seem like enough and yet a whole episode was built on it. While there are so many likable characters in Workin’ Moms, they all seemed unlikeable in one of the most clichéd Workin’ Moms storylines.

3 Frankie’s Confusing Relationship In Workin’ Moms Season 2

Frankie looks shocked in Workin' Moms

In season 2, Frankie is moving on from her marriage and starting to date again, but Dorothy (Angela Asher) isn’t the right person for her. Frankie moves in with her way too early, which makes no sense, and also runs all of Dorothy’s errands. Then there are the creepy scenes when Dorothy straightens Frankie’s hair so she resembles a poodle. It’s all very odd and doesn’t feel like the show. Frankie is such a smart, cool, creative, and quirky character. She deserved better Workin’ Moms storylines than this.

2 Frankie Can’t Sell A House

While Workin’ Moms has funny side characters, some forgettable episodes don’t have much going on. In season 5, Frankie has another plotline that doesn’t do her character justice. She tries to sell a house that is unattractive to buyers because something horrible happened there. This has been a storyline on several TV shows and at this point, it doesn’t feel unique or like it’s particularly compelling. It would have been funnier if Frankie encountered a truly quirky home that people didn’t understand.

1 Charlie’s Imaginary Friend In Workin’ Moms Season 6

Kate in a blue shirt looking serious on Workin' Moms

In the season 6 episode “Buried,” Kate’s son Charlie has an imaginary friend. This is another example of a storyline that doesn’t feel like it needs to be on the series. Kate is a fascinating character who is perceptive and intelligent but makes mistakes, which feels real. But her children could definitely have more unique plotlines as imaginary friends have been explored too many times on sitcoms and dramas about families, making it one of the most unbelievable Workin’ Moms storylines.
