Transformers One Animated Movie Hyped By Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson is the latest to hype up Transformers One‘s animation style. The upcoming Transformers movie, which is co-written and directed by Toy Story 4‘s Josh Cooley, explores the events that lead to Optimus Prime and Megatron going from being best friends to enemies on their home world of Cybertron. Other than Johansson as Elita, the star-studded Transformers One cast also includes Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion.

In an interview with Collider, Johansson teased the animated movie ahead of Transformers One‘s release date in September 2024. Though she couldn’t reveal too much this far out, Johansson had plenty of praise for Josh Cooley’s heartfelt story, as the two are also working together on Disney’s Tower of Terror movie. She also praised the movie’s animation by Industrial Light and Magic, saying “it looks so cool!” and “the texture of it is so awesome.” Read Johansson’s full comments below:

Yes, I’m playing Elita. I’m working with Josh Cooley, who is an incredible writer-director who I adore and have worked creatively with in another capacity. The film doesn’t look like anything I’ve ever seen before, it looks so cool! The texture of it is so awesome. And because Josh wrote it, it just feels very… I don’t know, it’s got a very dramatic feeling about it. It’s funny, but it’s got so much heart to it like all of his stuff does. I think it’s a different way of approaching this IP. I think it stands on its own, it’s pretty exciting.

What To Expect From Transformers One

Transformers Optimus Prime fighting Megatron

The last animated Transformers movie was released in 1986, aptly titled Transformers: The Movie, which underperformed at the box office and received generally negative reviews. At the time, younger audiences who saw the movie based on the Saturday morning cartoon were upset by its surprisingly emotional story which saw the violent deaths of many established characters, including Optimus Prime, prompting a massive letter-writing campaign. However, Transformers: The Movie‘s reception improved over the years as it gained a cult following.

Based on Johansson’s comments, it sounds like Transformers One will feature a much more heartwarming story, especially from the Toy Story 4 writer-director, that is different from any animated Transformers movie before. Without a first look having been unveiled, it remains to be seen what animation style Transformers One opts for, though it likely won’t revert back to traditional 2D hand-drawn animation. Instead, it could continue the trend of visually ambitious animated franchise films like Spider-Verse and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
