The upcoming 2023 Annual Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of Time #1 by Michael Walsh and Vlad Legostaev will show the Ninja Turtles facing a “threatening force from the future” as “worlds collide”, making the brothers question if they can “band together to take down this mysterious foe”. It seems as though this Turtle came back in time to kill the Ninja Turtles–but why? Three covers were included, one main cover and two variants, each one giving fans a clue into whom this new threat is, and how he’s able to challenge all the Ninja Turtles at once.

TMNT Main & Variant Covers Introduce New Future Villain

As shared by League of Comic Geeks, the main cover by artist Michael Walsh shows TMNT‘s evil Turtle standing on a New York City rooftop over the seemingly dead bodies of the original Turtles, and the style of this cover is done exactly like the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 cover by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, as if this new threat went back in time and slaughtered the Ninja Turtles before their series even kicked off. A variant cover by artist Vlad Legostaev gives fans a grisly close-up to the future Turtle, showing that they have a bionic arm, that they are well-equipped with weapons, and that they have a gnarly scar across their face that seems to impact one of their eyes. The last variant cover by artist Alexis Ziritt is perhaps the most immersive, as it throws fans right into the action. This cover shows the Ninja Turtles pursuing their time-sliding foe through the sewers of New York, with the embattled future Turtle ready to strike against them.

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, fans are thrown into the dystopian future of the TMNT universe where the Foot Clan conquered and the descendant of the Shredder, his grandson Oroku Hiroto, killed nearly every member of the TMNT–everyone, except Michelangelo. This put Mikey on a warpath, one that peace could not soothe, and one that had to end in his own victorious demise. Michelangelo was a tragic hero on a righteous mission to avenge his family, which seems to be the opposite of this futuristic Turtle, as their warpath is against the TMNT. Both are from the future, both are battle-worn, and both are on a mission that they’d be willing to die for. However, while Mickey fought for the memory of his brothers, this Turtle is fighting against them during a time-travel mission that wouldn’t just end with the Ninja Turtles dead, but with everything they’ve done erased from history.

While this villain is still a mystery–including their origin and motives–these Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles covers give fans some crucial insight into the character, including what they look like, what their mission is, and that they seem to be the dark opposite of Michelangelo’s Last Ronin.

2023 Annual Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of Time #1 by IDW Publishing will be available July 12, 2023.
