Star Wars Is Ready To Explain What Happened To A Jedi Missing For Over A Year

Star Wars is finally ready to reveal the fate of one crucial missing Jedi from The High Republic era. The High Republic is a transmedia publishing initiative that chronicles the lives of the Jedi at the height of their power centuries before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Though the High Republic’s first phase of storytelling ended in 2022, that storyline is being picked up when The High Republic Phase III launches later this year, which will detail the ramifications of the cataclysmic destruction of the Starlight Beacon space station.

As Starlight Beacon fell, many Jedi did everything in their power to save the station and the people trapped inside; and while many lives were saved, one Jedi’s fate has yet to be confirmed. The Wookiee Jedi Burryaga went missing just before Starlight Beacon was destroyed, and Star Wars recently announced on Twitter that his fate would soon be revealed.

Given Burryaga was one of the main characters of the High Republic’s first phase of storytelling, it’s no surprise that Star Wars would choose to announce what happened to him before the first installment of the High Republic Phase III. Wookiees may be notoriously strong and steadfast, but no one is safe from the wrath of the Nihil.

How Burryaga, The Jedi Wookiee, Went Missing

Starlight Beacon was built to be a Republic symbol of hope and prosperity for the Outer Rim territories and the Galactic Frontier. A way station to provide supplies, aid, and a safe haven from the terrors of the galaxy, Starlight Beacon represented everything the Nihil despised. The Nihil, a group of marauders intent on pillaging the galaxy and destroying the Jedi and the Republic put their grand plan into motion near the end of the High Republic Phase I, in order to bring Starlight Beacon, and thus the hope of the Jedi, down once and for all. When the Nihil implemented their attack, the Wookiee Jedi Burryaga, along with several other Jedi, were trapped on board.

The Nihil’s attack as described in Claudia Gray’s The Fallen Star novel led to Burryaga having to fight two escaped Rathtars in Starlight Beacon’s lower half to save the civilians being evacuated. Rathtars are famously dangerous Star Wars creatures; large, carnivorous, and tentacled, first featured in Star Wars: The Force Awakens aboard Han Solo’s freighter. Fighting one Rathtar is hard enough, but fighting two alone is almost impossible. When Burryaga went after the creatures and failed to return, he was presumed dead. Fellow Jedi Padawan Bell Zettifar, however, refused to believe Burryaga’s fate and vowed to find him, even after the remains of Starlight Beacon crashed into the planet Eiram. Perhaps The High Republic Phase III will prove Bell right.
