Release Date, Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two updates are coming in quick, as the eighth installment in the hit action franchise is planned to be released just one year after Part One. Most details are being kept tightly under wraps, but there’s been much speculation about whether any new cast members will be announced and what Tom Cruise could possibly do to top the already-incredible feats he’s done as Ethan Hunt so far. The story of Dead Reckoning Part Two will pick up after Part One, which brings protagonist Ethan Hunt and co. together to face his most dangerous battle yet, balancing the safety of everybody that he loves within his hands. Much like the movies that preceded it, Dead Reckoning is filled with high-octane action and an intense narrative that sees Hunt pushed to his limits.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two has revealed that the eighth Mission: Impossible movie, much like its predecessor, will be written and directed by Tom Cruise’s long-time collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, who’s often credited with revitalizing the Mission Impossible franchise with 2015’s Rogue Nation. Just like every other installment in the franchise, Dead Reckoning Part One is filled with wild stunts and unbelievable choreography that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, and judging by McQuarrie’s continued involvement in the sequel, Part Two should be just as exciting and blood-pumping.

The latest Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2 updates reveal a surprising bit of information about where the Mission: Impossible franchise is heading. Speaking to Collider about Dead Reckoning Part 1, Christopher McQuarrie was asked about how Dead Reckoning Part 2 might conclude the story. Given that production is very much in full swing, it might be surprising to hear McQuarrie admit that “I don’t know what the ending of Part Two is, so I couldn’t tell you.” He goes on to say “I could tell you that I know what the end of Part Two is, but I can’t guarantee that that will be the ending when we get there.”

The seventh and eighth entries in the Mission Impossible franchise were simultaneously announced by both Cruise and McQuarrie on January 15, 2019. Since the stories are so tightly connected, and likely use many of the same locations, both were filmed together over a period of several months throughout 2020 — before the COVID outbreak forced production to shut down and caused a serious delay to both movies. Filming then recommenced for Dead Reckoning Part Two, with locations including Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two Release Date

In spite of several delays in filming, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two is currently set for a release date of June 28, 2024. This will be just under one year after the release of Dead Reckoning Part One, giving audiences plenty of time to catch up with the first installment and consider the consequences of whatever wild journey Ethan Hunt embarks on before watching the grand finale. It will also be 28 years after the release of the original Mission: Impossible, ranking it among the longest-running action franchises ever made.

However, McQuarrie explained that the film is 40% complete, and as the movie production had to go on pause due to the writer’s strike, it’s cutting it extremely fine to reach the summer 2024 Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two release date. McQuarrie said of the seemingly nonstop production delays, “It’s unrelenting. Behind each tsunami is another tsunami. We live in a state of 24-hour tsunami awareness. That’s just what we do.” Fortunately, just as Cruise was committed to shooting Mission: Impossible – Fallout during the pandemic, the production should be quickly put back on track following the end of the strike.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two Cast

The cast of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two looks very similar to the cast of Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One, with Cruise obviously returning as international spy Ethan Hunt, alongside a series of associates and familiar enemies. Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames will be making appearances as Benji and Luther respectively, two of Hunt’s closest friends and most trusted advisors in the field. Rebecca Ferguson reprises her role as Ilsa Faust, an espionage agent who made her first appearance in 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.

Other actors include Vanessa Kirby as The White Widow, an illegal arms dealer who made her debut in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and Esai Morales as Gabriel, the mysterious figure who seems to be Hunt’s primary target throughout both Dead Reckoning movies. Pom Klementieff is confirmed to be returning for the sequel after making her first appearance in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One as a secondary antagonist. Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham has also joined the cast in an undisclosed role.

Another fun bit of casting news reveals that Rolf Saxon will return to the Mission: Impossible franchise. Given his involvement in the very first Mission: Impossible movie in 1996, it’s almost certain that Saxon will be reprising his role as CIA analyst William Donloe. Fans will remember that Donloe was the target of the infamous Langley heist sequence in which Hunt stole the NOC List from him. Donloe is last seen being fired and reassigned to a polar substation in Alaska.

There’s an air of uncertainty about whether Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two will actually be the final installment in the franchise, despite it originally being announced and marketed as such. When pressed about the issue by EW, director McQuarrie gave a somewhat mysterious answer: “There’s always a plan, the plan always changes, everything goes completely awry, and hopefully everything always turns out alright in the end. But you never really fully understand, or trust where it is you’re going, until you get there.” This seems to suggest that McQuarrie now has doubts about ending the franchise, potentially cooking up more adventures for Hunt and his friends (and somewhat assuaging worries that Ethan Hunt will be killed off).

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two Story Details

Details about Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’s story are a well-guarded secret, but the title suggests that it will directly continue the narrative that’s laid out by its predecessor. That means that Hunt will likely still be fighting against the mysterious Gabriel, though his intentions and plans aren’t exactly clear. In the trailer for Dead Reckoning Part One, Hunt is told: “you need to pick a side,” suggesting that he’s beginning to question the very institution that he’s dedicated his life to, perhaps even sympathizing with his enemies’ cause. It’s a much darker and grittier take on the Mission: Impossible story, and the second part will surely explore these ideas too.

Judging by the cast list for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, it also seems like Hunt is gathering a large team of allies to bring down whatever dangerous battle he’s facing. Audiences can expect to see Mission: Impossible’s protagonist reunite with several old friends and associates from his past — suggesting that William Donloe might not be the only long-forgotten character from earlier movies that will be making another appearance.
