Marvel’s Illuminati Reunites to Stop Evil Reed Richards

Warning: Contains spoilers for Ultimate Invasion #1Marvel has reunited the Illuminati to fight the Maker, an evil variant of Reed Richards. In Ultimate Invasion #1, the Maker breaks free of prison, and sets out to return to the Ultimate Universe for reasons yet unknown. Whatever the Maker has planned, it is not good, forcing the Illuminati to reunite and decide what to do with this evil Reed Richards–but has he grown too powerful for them?

Ultimate Invasion #1 is written by Jonathan Hickman, drawn by Bryan Hitch, inked by Andrew Currie, colored by Alex Sinclair and lettered by Joe Caramagna. After a team of mercenaries breaks the Maker out of his containment cell, the evil Reed Richards begins gathering various objects, such as a mutant gateway and massive amounts of vibranium. The Maker takes his contraband from each member of the Illuminati, seemingly from right under their noses. The Illuminati debate a course of action to deal with the Maker; they try to piece together his motivations and his eventual endgame. Finally, the Maker shows himself, revealing he has taken the stolen materials and built a highly sophisticated dimensional teleportation device. The Illuminati attack the Maker’s machine, hitting it with their combined might–to no avail. The Maker has built the machine well, and gives the Illuminati the slip.

It is a testament to the Maker’s ingenuity that he is able to withstand the Illuminati’s combined assault, as the group is made up of some of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe. Their existence was revealed during Brian Michael Bendis’ New Avengers run; the group consists of Black Panther, Iron Man, Reed Richards, Professor X, Doctor Strange, Namor and Black Bolt. Formed shortly after the first Kree-Skrull War, the Illuminati came together in secret to trade information and be better prepared for future invasions and incidents. The Illuminati have come and gone over the years—and now they have reunited to take on one of the biggest threats to the Marvel Universe: an evil Reed Richards.

Illuminati vs the Maker in Ultimate Invasion

As stated earlier, the Illuminati consists of some of the publisher’s biggest hitters, and they represent the diverse areas of the Marvel Universe: Professor X stands for Earth’s mutants, Reed and Iron Man represent science and technology, Doctor Strange is magic’s representative and Black Bolt, Black Panther and Namor are rulers of powerful kingdoms. When taken together, the Illuminati represent the entirety of the Marvel Universe–and yet the Maker is able to not only steal from under their noses but also defeat them in combat. The Illuminati must now find a way to keep the Maker from setting his plans into motion–whatever they may be.

The Maker shares one key difference from his 616 counterpart: his brain continues to grow and evolve. He is able to concoct an escape plan with no one knowing, as well brazenly stealing powerful objects with no resistance. Now obsessed with restoring his universe to existence, his scope has grown considerably, and may have even put him intellectually ahead of Marvel‘s Illuminati. The trick now is for them to outthink this evil version of Reed Richards–which may be easier said than done.
