Marvel Confirms They’ll Never Answer Captain Marvel’s Biggest MCU Phase 3 Mystery

With Carol Danvers’ absence from the Secret Invasion series, the MCU won’t get an answer to Captain Marvel’s ending mystery. Set in the 90s, Captain Marvel followed Carol as she found out the truth about her Kree roots and how she was essentially taken by the Kree. With the Krees and the Skrull alien race at war, Carol eventually found out the Kree’s real motives were to frame the Skrulls as invaders. Turning on them, Captain Marvel and Nick Fury helped the Skrulls escape the Kree’s pursuit.

At the end of Captain Marvel, Carol left to aid the Skrulls in their search for a new home planet. However, by Secret Invasion, many Skrulls are upset at both Fury and Captain Marvel for abandoning them in their search for a new home planet. The series will be solely focused on Nick Fury, meaning that Secret Invasion won’t answer the questions that Captain Marvel’s ending left. Especially with the Captain Marvel sequel taking a different direction, it seems like the ending won’t ever be addressed.

Secret Invasion Removing Captain Marvel Leaves A Huge Mystery

Carol Danvers looking serious in Captain Marvel

After Carol left with the Skrulls at the end of Captain Marvel, she wasn’t heard from until her next MCU appearance in Avengers: Endgame. Though there was no mention of the Skrulls, it was assumed that she had already found the Skrulls a home by the time she responded to Fury’s call on the pager. Especially with some Skrulls appearing in disguise on Earth and plenty on the S.A.B.E.R. space station, they seemed to have all found their place. However, that would not be the case.

With Secret Invasion taking place almost 30 years after Captain Marvel, Carol’s whereabouts in those in-between years are ultimately a mystery. Secret Invasion follows the renegade group of Skrulls who still struggle to find a home. They mention several times that Fury and Carol abandoned them, with Fury’s abandonment being more obvious as he left Earth. Carol’s abandonment is never elaborated on, and with her not set to appear in Secret Invasion, the mystery won’t be answered unless a character thoroughly explains the timeline.

The Marvels Won’t Answer Where Captain Marvel Went

The Marvels Trailer Carol Danvers Ms Marvel Post Credits

Premiering in November 2023, The Marvels will feature a team-up between Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau’s Photon. The film will take place in the present-day MCU, meaning that it’s been some time since the end of Captain Marvel. With the trio having their own problems on their hands, there likely won’t be any relation to the displaced Skrulls. The Marvels will be much different from how many thought the sequel would go, ignoring the cliffhanger that Captain Marvel left.

After defeating her former Starforce colleagues and sending her mentor Yon-Rogg away, a natural place for the sequel to go would be Carol getting her revenge on the Kree and defeating the Supreme Intelligence like she said she would. However, The Marvels is already taking a completely different route by setting the film years later. Carol might’ve already achieved her goals off-screen, and there’s even a chance the film will address it with the Kree warrior Dar-Benn being the main villain. However, along with her involvement in the Skrull mission, her immediate post-Captain Marvel goals seem to be long in the past.

Why Secret Invasion Ignored Captain Marvel

Nick Fury and Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel

Secret Invasion was promoted as a study into Nick Fury and his first solo story. In the show, the Skrull rebellion is described as a direct consequence of Fury leaving Earth. The idea of him causing the Skrull invasion narrows Secret Invasion’s story down in a way that needed to happen for a series with limited episodes. Captain Marvel is one of the strongest heroes in the universe, and bringing a powerful, near-immortal Avenger to deal with the problem wouldn’t have made for quite an interesting story. Secret Invasion needed to exclude her for the show to feel more grounded.

Captain Marvel’s Carol Danvers cliffhanger seemed like the natural place for her next MCU story to go. However, Secret Invasion only leads to more questions as it was revealed that the Skrulls felt abandoned by Captain Marvel, meaning that she must’ve never fulfilled her promise to them. With the focus of The Marvels being the team-up between Carol, Kamala, and Monica in the modern day, it seems like Carol’s whereabouts after Captain Marvel will remain an MCU mystery.
