Joker 2’s Release Avoids A Major Problem For The Batman 2

The scheduled release date for Joker: Folie à Deux helps The Batman – Part II avoid a problem that could have majorly sabotaged the movie upon its own release. With Joker and The Batman both having massively successful releases, it’s hard to tell which sequel audiences are more excited for. In fact, the excitement for The Batman arguably heightened anticipation for Joker 2, due to the similarities between the two series.

However, despite not existing in the same universe, The Batman 2 and Joker 2 still present some complications for one another. For example, the Joker 2 teases involving Two Face suggest that The Batman – Part II will have to avoid using the character to prevent their stories and worlds paralleling one another too directly. Given the source material, though, there is one character the two sequels can’t avoid featuring: the Joker. As such, it’s for the best that the Joker: Folie à Deux release alleviates one prospective complication that the two live-action movie Jokers could have faced.

Releasing Joker 2 A Year Before The Batman 2 Prevents A Joker Clash

Joker ending Joker 2 Joaquin Phoenix

Joker 2 is currently set to release on October 4 2024. This puts it a day under a year before the release of The Batman 2, which is currently scheduled for its own release on October 3 2025. Were the two movies to have been released close to one another, it’s likely their versions of the Joker would have been put in closer comparison, creating an unofficial competition between them that would ultimately benefit neither unique imagining of the Batman villain.

Placing almost a year between the Joker 2 and The Batman 2 releases minimizes the possibility of this competition, by instead giving Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker some time to proverbially breathe before Barry Keoghan’s iteration arrives to the big screen. While both Jokers will still likely be compared to their predecessors, this will be more in terms of seeing how each Joker fits into the overall live-action universe and which previous Joker they’re most like, which is preferable to two versions having to duke it out because of how closely they were released to one another.

Joker 2 & The Batman 2’s Worlds Mean They’re Best Released Distantly

Joker 2 The batman

There are also other benefits to ensuring Joker: Folie à Deux and The Batman – Part II are released more distantly, outside of preventing a live-action clown competition. Perhaps one of the most crucial of these is in terms of the respective worlds that Joker and The Batman have cultivated, as these play a huge role in both movies’ success. Gritty Batman worlds aren’t unheard of in basically any medium, but Joker 2 and The Batman 2 have both managed to capture the same spark regarding Gotham itself, which is reflected in not dissimilar visual designs for the location.

However, these similar versions of the city have been used to some greatly different effects, with Joker showing Gotham as a powder keg with citizens ready to riot the minute they gain a figurehead, and The Batman showing a picture of hope due to the way Pattinson’s hero interacts with those same civilians. As such, unless either sequel drifts from the original in this sense, placing distance between Joker: Folie à Deux and The Batman – Part II lets them continue enhancing and fleshing out these worlds without the contrast between them muddying either movie’s vision.
