Is Babylon 5’s New Movie A Sequel, Spinoff Or Reboot?

J. Michael Straczynski only just recently announced his latest project, the animated Babylon 5: The Road Home, which comes out August 2023 and is yet another installment of the 1990s space opera Babylon 5, but the question remains: how does this film fit into the canon. Babylon 5 is a sci-fi series that premiered in 1994 and ran for five seasons following the human inhabitants of a space station called Babylon 5. The 2023 film Babylon 5: The Road Home is an animated, direct-to-video movie following John Sheridan as he finds himself transported through multiple dimensions, seeing familiar faces along the way.

Babylon 5: The Road Home is the seventh feature film in the Babylon 5 franchise and the first to be animated. When Babylon 5 ended after season 5, a series of TV movies were released including In the Beginning, Thirdspace, and The River of Souls. There was also a Babylon 5 film, pre-dating the series, that was released, and a film, A Call To Arms, that was meant to kick off the ultimately unsuccessful spin-off series Crusade. All in all, Babylon 5 has a wide range of media connected to it, leaving each new installment with the question of how it fits into the rest of the content.

Babylon 5: The Road Home Is Canon To The TV Show

Babylon 5 The Road Home-1

First and foremost, Babylon 5 is canon to the original 1994 television series. It includes the same characters with the same members of the Babylon 5 cast voicing their roles, besides those who are no longer alive. In particular, Bruce Boxleitner, Claudia Christian, Peter Jurasik, Bill Mumy, Tracy Scoggins, and Patricia Tallman will reprise their original roles. Some new additions to the cast include Paul Guyet, Anthony Hansen, Phil LaMarr, Andrew Morgado, Rebecca Riedy, Piotr Michael, and Mara Junot.

Additionally, according to the trailer, Babylon 5: The Road Home takes place two years after John Sheridan won the Shadow Wars. It seems that the series will focus heavily on Sheridan and his travels through time. However, this does not mean that other beloved Babylon 5 characters will not appear. As stated in Babylon 5: The Road Home’s summary, “Along the way, he reunites with some familiar faces, while discovering cosmic new revelations about the history, purpose, and meaning of the Universe.”

Babylon 5: The Road Home Is Not Connected To The Upcoming Reboot

Babylon 5 Sheridan

Although Babylon 5: The Road Home is directly connected to the original series, it is not correlated with the Babylon 5 reboot show that was announced by Straczynski in 2021. While Babylon 5: The Road Home continues the adventures of John Sheridan and his crew, the Babylon 5 reboot will completely remake the series with a new cast. However, Straczynski is still attached to the project as a producer. Furthermore, the reboot is being released by The CW, even despite the various changes made during the Warner Bros. Discovery merger.

So, while the Babylon 5 reboot was announced in 2021, and as of now, is still in the works, Babylon 5: The Road Home is a separate project completely. The film was announced in May 2023 and will be shown for the first time at Comic-Con in July 2023. For general audiences, the film will be available to stream on August 15th, 2023 on Amazon, Apple TV, Vudu, and YouTube.

Babylon 5’s New Movie Can Still Set Up The Reboot

Babylon 5 Road

Despite the fact that Babylon 5: The Road Home is not related to the CW Babylon 5 reboot, the former can still set up the latter. As a film taking on the concept of the multiverse, The Road Home can easily reference the upcoming reboot, especially through visuals. Perhaps John Sheridan will get peeks into different dimensions and timelines, and within those, will see a glimpse into the CW reboot. Even the idea that different Babylon 5 timelines exist is enough to set up the reboot. Overall, this would be an especially great reference for Babylon 5 fans who are anticipating the reboot.

Overall, Babylon 5: The Road Home is the latest in a long line of Babylon 5 content, most of which tells the same continuous story. In this instance, The Road Home is groundbreaking in that it’s the first animated piece of content related to Babylon 5, and also will tackle the popular concept of the multiverse. In this way, Babylon 5: The Road Home is continuing its legacy into the present day and bringing long-time fans new and exciting content.
