10 Marvel Heroes Missing From MCU Phase 5

The ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 5 will introduce new superheroes to the shared universe, but not all of its established heroes are expected to return. The first three Phases of the MCU, retroactively known as the “Infinity Saga,” changed the landscape of not only superhero films but the pop culture zeitgeist, making what was once a niche genre a mainstream and lucrative success. Following the Infinity Saga’s conclusion, the MCU underwent somewhat of a decline in Phase 4, partially due to the covid-19 pandemic, yet it brought back beloved heroes from the previous three Phases and introduced new ones, initiating what is now known as the “Multiverse Saga.”

While the multiverse and the growing threat of Kang the Conqueror will grow in prominence in Phases 4 through 6, Phase 4 specifically has a strong focus on the aftermath of the Infinity Saga. Successors to original Avengers members who either died or retired are introduced and entirely new heroes are established, growing the MCU’s pantheon and preparing viewers for the coming conflict with Kang. Of all the old and new heroes, however, here are ten who will likely not appear in the MCU’s ongoing Phase 5 properties.

10 Doctor Strange

Introduced towards the end of the Infinity Saga, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is one of the MCU’s most powerful heroes and one who can intrinsically explore the multiverse itself. Doctor Strange’s use of the Darkhold in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness resulted in him growing a third eye and receiving an ominous visit from Clea, warning him of a multiversal incursion. While Strange is sure to return to the MCU, it will likely not be in any of Phase 5’s announced properties, but rather a third Doctor Strange film or Phase 6’s Avengers installments.

9 Thor

Chris Hemsworth in Thor Love and Thunder

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is one of the MCU’s first superheroes, having starred in four solo films and every Avengers installment thus far. While Thor himself is still alive by the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, making a future Avengers appearance possible, Chris Hemsworth is not currently contracted for any more appearances as the God of Thunder and has been vocally critical of Love and Thunder’s excessive irreverence. While Thor may return in Phase 6 to battle Kang, a Phase 5 appearance is highly unlikely.

8 Shang-Chi

A powerful and compelling new superhero introduced in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi completed his origin story and made contact with The Avengers at the end of his solo outing. Now part of the MCU’s new generation of superheroes, Shang-Chi can be expected to appear in not only the future Avengers installments but also more solo films. Unfortunately, Phase 5 does not include either, so while Shang-Chi is expected to appear in future MCU films, Phase 5’s movies will likely not be among them.

7 Sersi

Eternals 2 Sersi return Arishem

Played by Gemma Chan, Sersi is one of the surviving Eternals by the end of the eponymous film. As shown in Eternals and as stated by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, Sersi is the film’s protagonist, and she is last left on an ambiguous note, with the Celestial Arishem kidnapping her and two of her Eternals teammates to analyze their memories. Sersi will likely show up again in a future MCU project, such as an Eternals sequel or a future Avengers film, but any potential Phase 5 appearances have not been announced.

6 Black Panther

Following the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, any planned future appearances by his character, T’Challa, were scrapped. In-universe, T’Challa also passes away, and the mantle of the Black Panther is passed down to his younger sister, Shuri, in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. As with many other new heroes introduced in Phase 4, Shuri is sure to appear as Black Panther in future MCU films, but will likely remain absent from Phase 5’s properties.

5 She-Hulk

Introduced to the MCU in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters is the latest gamma-irradiated superhero in the franchise. Like her comic counterpart, She-Hulk often breaks the fourth wall, at one point changing the finale of her miniseries out of disinterest in the conflict. The upcoming Captain America: Brave New World will include key characters from The Hulk’s corner of the MCU and may even include a cameo by Bruce Banner himself, but it is unlikely that She-Hulk will appear in the film or any other Phase 5 property.

4 Moon Knight

Like Doctor Strange, Moon Knight is closely tied to the supernatural side of the MCU, making an appearance possible in Blade, which will also delve into that corner of the universe. Since Oscar Isaac’s Marvel contract ended after the first season of Moon Knight and a second season was never announced, however, this does not appear likely. For the time being, Moon Knight has no further appearances announced, in Phase 5 or otherwise.

3 Vision

Vision has been a prominent MCU hero since his debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the original Vision died in Avengers: Infinity War. In WandaVision, however, Wanda Maximoff creates a short-lived replica of Vision who transfers his memories (including those of the original Vision) to White Vision, a recreation of the original activated by S.W.O.R.D. White Vision has not been seen since WandaVision, but while he can potentially appear in a Phase 5 MCU property, it is more likely that he’ll resurface in the next Avengers movie.

2 Spider-Man

ending of spider-man no way home

Strangely enough, despite being Marvel’s flagship character, Spider-Man (played in the main MCU by Tom Holland) most likely will not appear until the next Avengers films either. Spider-Man’s status quo was obliterated at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, with only the two other Spider-Man variants (Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield) remembering that he is the Peter Parker of his Earth. Tom Holland is all but confirmed to return in a fourth Spider-Man solo movie and will presumably return in the next two Avengers films, but until his next outing is announced, it is safe to assume he will be absent from Phase 5.

1 Kate Bishop

Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton survived the events of the Infinity Saga and his Disney+ miniseries but has retired from his superhero career, passing the Hawkeye mantle down to newcomer Kate Bishop, played by Hailee Steinfeld. Bishop will likely be a leading member of the next roster of The Avengers, but since the next Avengers film is part of Phase 6, this makes her chances of appearing in Phase 5 unlikely. Of course, this does not prevent Bishop from being referenced as the new Hawkeye in a Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 5 property like Thunderbolts.
